With the federal government expected to announce its decision on the Enbridge Northern Gateway oil pipeline in June, economic and environmental experts are warning the public of the potential pitfalls that could come with it, even comparing it to the Exxon Valdez disaster of 1989.
UBC fisheries economist Ngaio Hotte has ran the numbers looking at a no-spill situation up to what would happen if a disaster the size of the Exxon Valdez were to take place along the proposed tanker route.
“The potential economic impact cost depends very much on the size and location of the spill,” Hotte said. “So if there’s a lot of high-end fishing lodges nearby, like near the exit of the Douglas Channel, the impacts are going to be greater.”
